Midi Backing Tracks…

Midi backing tracks are a method of getting backing tracks that I’ve stumbled across recently and have fallen in love with using them. With the right software you can alter these tracks to sound amazing! So amazing in fact that I use them almost exclusively to support the band I sing in when we perform live. Be sure to bookmark this page so you can refresh your memory about the facts of using this type of file.

First of all, there are a couple of ways to get midi backing tracks. You can buy them, or you can get them off the internet for free. Who wouldn’t want that right? Me too. Personally I do a bit of both and here’s the reason why. I’ve found a site called www.musicrobot.com where I can get most of the tracks I need for free. Now I generally am not using these tracks as a karaoke source so much as a keyboard or horn part to make the band sound better but the principal is the same. So the problem with using free midi backing tracks is that they are sometimes not sequenced quite correctly or they may not have all of the instrument parts (or the correct instrument parts).

When I can’t find the midi tracks I need there I go to a site like Song Galaxy . They have loads of midi backing tracks that you can buy for just a few dollars a piece. Go ahead and click on the link to check out what they have. It’ll open in a new window so you don’t lose your place here. Be sure to check out some of the samples they have. You will probably think to yourself "How would I sing using that? It sounds terrible!" Well you’re right it does sound terrible and cheap but you have not yet worked the magic of midi backing tacks.

The Particular song above is actually a sample that we use on stage in our band. Since we have a drummer and bass/guitar I was able to remove all those instruments and made the remaining parts into different types of horn parts and cello, violins etc, that I over-laid to help it sound thicker. Midi backing tracks are not actually sound files. They’re a set of commands that tell an instrument or sound card how to respond. If you try to record a midi file it just won’t work. The sample above is actually a recording of the midi file coming out of my soundcard. They tell the instrument how long the note is, how hard to attack it, what kind of decay it will have etc…

Having said all that you won’t believe how it easy it is! You have to learn how to do it of course but once you do it’s an awesome way to get the music you need. In some ways it’s even better than MP3 backing tracks because you can choose to use whatever instruments you like…I have opted to use a program called Cubase to make my tracks. Go ahead and click on the link it’ll open in a new window so you don’t have to lose your place. Now at first glance it seems pretty expensive but it sort of depends on what you compare it to. When I was in the Van Halen Tribute we paid a guy a couple of thousand dollars to lay down keyboard only backing tracks to eight songs. Buying MP3 backing tracks cost about US$10 for karaoke and backing tracks like the ones we used in the Van Halen Tribute cost between US$100 and US$200. The cost can add up pretty quickly. So when you consider the cost of the program in that light it’s not really too expensive at all. Also it’s easy to use and as I said earlier you can get most MIDI files for free.

Another inexpensive way for you to create your own backing tracks using midi is to use a program like SONY ACID MUSIC STUDIO 7. The first time I used this program I wasn't very enamoured by it but after spending just a few hours with it I’ve really come to enjoy it more than the Cubase program. First of all it’s super easy to use. You simply open the program. Insert your midi file you got for free earlier, install the DLS synth and pick your instruments. MIDI tracks usually come with their tracks titled after the instrument so track 1 may be your drum set of choice, track 2 may be bass guitar, track 3 may be piano or whatever. It depends on how the MIDI file is programmed. The point is this, it’s very easy to do and the instruments in this program sound awesome!

I have both programs and right now am using ACID MUSIC when I just need backing tracks and I use Cubase when I need to have tracks that require me to record backing vocals. Go ahead and click on the links to check it out. They’ll open in a new window so you don’t lose your place.

You can use midi backing tracks for singing, jam tracks as a guitar player, drummers can use them (be sure to include a click track for drummers) or anybody at all doing anything musical. You can rehearse with them, use them for live performances, whatever you like or need. The beauty is that once you know how to make them. It really only takes a few minutes per song to turn it into something you can use and you’ll literally be amazed at the sound.

As a singer you’ll be happy to know that you can adjust the pitch of these tracks or the speed or anything you require so be sure to try different things to help them. Of course if this all seem s to daunting for you than it’s perfectly acceptable to buy the backing tracks you need. You can get them at www.backing-tracks-for-bands.com for a reasonable price and they’re pro quality too.est suit your purpose.
