You’ve just got to try a Shure Microphone!

A Shure microphone quite simply is going to give you the biggest bang for the buck, not to mention one of the best sounds. There are all sorts of models to choose from but there are certain models that seem to be the "staples" of the live music scene.

The most popular Shure mic has to be the Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Microphone . Literally every night club I’ve ever played in that supplies sound has the Shure SM58 as it’s microphone of choice. Now, I may not have played at as many clubs as some people but I have played at a ton of them. To me, when that many sound men (who are professionals by the way) are choosing these mics, well, there must be something to it. I know I‘ve always been very happy with the performance of my SM58’s in the past.

Another semi-popular Shure microphone is the Shure SM57 Cardioid Dynamic Microphone . It’s basically the same microphone as the SM58 but it has a different mouthpiece on it. It’s actually more of an instrument mic than a vocal mic due to it’s range of sound pick up. The SM58 picks up sound from just about any place around the mouthpiece where the SM57 requires your voice to be straight in front of it and not at all to the side or your voice won’t be heard. That’s the reason it’s used as an instrument mic, it doesn’t easily pick up other stage sounds due to the design of it’s mouth piece.

If you have money to spare then I would say to you it would be best spent on a Shure Beta 58A . These mics are hot and are my favorite Shure microphone. If you were to compare the difference between a twenty dollar piece of junk and an SM58, the sound difference would be quite noticeable. The SM58 would be amazingly crisper and cleaner than the cheap mic. Well the Beta 58A is that much cleaner and better sounding than even the Shure SM58 . I personally don’t own one yet but my next microphone purchase will be a Beta 58A .

I know first hand that as a struggling singer and performer it can be difficult to drum up the money to afford the gear you want but I still say you should make every effort you can to get into the good stuff straight away. I’m not saying you need to rush out and buy a Beta 58A . You’ll be able to find a used Shure SM58 if you look for it, even an SM57 would get you started. Just be sure you make the effort. If you have a killer voice then you don’t want to hide it behind some junky sounding piece of equipment. Remember: Good gear helps make you sound good!

Shure has tons of mics available and they’re a reputable company so you really can’t go wrong buying any of their stuff. Just be sure to do some side by side comparisons so you understand why you like your choice the best.

A good alternative to spending tons of cash on any of your gear is trying to find it on e-Bay. I’ve seen all sorts of music stuff bought this way and you can often find good deals there.
