Tips on Singing

It can be difficult to find any useful tips on singing on the internet. At least when it comes to practical tips anyways. There is a lot of info out there and as usual, everybody with info tends to think their way is the best way. I don't particularly agree or disagree that any one person is the web guru when it comes to singin
g. I do promote a few on this site because I believe they're miles beyond the rest however. After checking out all kinds of lesson material and spending years and years on stage, I’ve definitely found ways to make singing easier on myself. Easy to the point that often I can even sing when I’m sick.

One of the easiest thing you can do to ensure your success as a singer is to take the time to figure out what your natural range is. I know it’s tempting to want to be able to sing all these extremely high screams that people are doing today, scream singing included. But while the ability to do that may actually be well within your reach, it’s not really the best place for you start as a singer. You really need to figure out songs that you can hit the notes in, all of the notes that is, and start to expand your range from there. I know it sounds too simple but the truth is, I’ve seen tons of singers at jam nights and open mic nights go up and try to sing something like AC/DC, fail miserably, and then make a ton of excuses as to why they’re not hitting it. Ere’s the reason why… They simply haven’t taken the time to learn how to sing high and they might even end up hurting themselves in the process of trying to sing high if they continue.

Other tips on singing that I’ve seen as lesson material but never just as a general tip, is the use of the head voice. The head voice is what makes the difference between being able to sing, and being able to sing as high as you want. I admit that here was once a time when I was not fond of the head voice. It was my own fault because I was not using it properly. When you use your head voice it’s possible to hit the highest of highs. All of the best singers use their head voice. Take a singer like Kelly Clarkson as an example. We’ve all heard the extremely high voices she uses in her songs. Well people, that’s all head voice. She of course is quite awesome at using it properly but it’s head voice nonetheless, we all have it, even you. The point here is that you can achieve those highs just like she can, all you have to do is learn to use your head voice.

Im telling you now that if you’ve ever seen the ads from singing lesson companies claiming to add an octave to your range you can believe it’s true. They add that octave by teaching you to use your own head voice. Naturally they take you through exercises to help you develop your own head voice but by the end of it, and it happens pretty quickly, you can sing much higher than you ever did before.

I’ve seen other tips on sing that have to do with posture and breathing in to fill up your diaphragm but not your lungs and all kinds of other silly things. Well, I don’t want to say that those tips are wrong, but I would like to say that everybody is unique, and just because posture or breathing a certain way works well for some people, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for you. I think that a singer on a stage in particular needs to be dynamic and moving around all over the place so I have little regard for the posture theory. Having said that, I also understand that there my be some physiological requirement for a person to move or bend or stand a certain way in order to get certain pitches or tone out of there voice.

If you want to learn how to sing then by far the best way to do it is to get yourself into some singing lessons. I have a tendency to promote lessons from two people on this site. You can click on the links to check them out. They’ll open in new windows so you don’t lose your place here.

The first is by a lady named Emily Mander and the program she brings is called Singorama. Over the years I’ve watched her course evolve in to something really good. She teaches all about head voice and how to use it properly, how bridge the gap between head voice and chest voice and all kinds of things relating to vocal style and emotion as well. Her course is the only one I know of that comes with it’s own recording software so you can record your singing  and  play it back to hear what you’ve done well, as well as what you need to work on.
