Another vocal tip for you…

The following is also taken straight out of my e-book. I hope you find it helpful…

Tip #2:

Do What You Can Do Best Where You Can Do It Best!

For me this concept is much easier to get in my head because it is actually measurable. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out or even a semi-pro singer for that matter. If you’re singing something that is too high for abilities right now, then your voice is going to crack! If you sing something that is too low for your present abilities you are likely going to sing sharp! These two scenarios represent your limits. We all have limits so you might as well accept the fact that you have them too!

I think you should be getting the picture already so I’ll just get straight to the point. Sing in the range that best suits your voice. You’ll know in a number of ways whether or not you’re in your proper range. If your voice is cracking, you’re probably too high. If you’re sharp and wavering then you’re probably too low. I personally have a harder time with low notes but I find a spot in my mid range where I also may havea tendency to waver. I’ve learned to beat that problem by singing from my diaphragm for my mids but if I waver on my lows then I’m at my limit plain and simple.

In time you will start learning to expand your range but for now sing in the range that you can hit. If you have throat pain then you are doing something wrong. The best way to expand your range is to have a solid base to build on and that comes back to you being honest with yourself. If you think you have a high voice but you’re cracking all the time you’re not sticking to your range. Work where your voice is the strongest and try to go higher slowly. It will come in time with practice and proper breathing etc. We’ll cover breathing later.

I know I talk a lot about this honesty but I can’t stress enough how important it is. We all know of someone that thinks they are a superior artist for example. While their work may make them feel proud their friends say amongst themselves “man, that painting is garbage!” You know very well that in the face of the artist the group of friends are saying “Hey, that’s a great job, really” and then they’re slicing and dicing the poor guy once his back is turned. If you think for a minute that people aren’t going to do that to you then you are not being honest with yourself in more ways than one!

A little off base but important nonetheless.

So how do you know what your present range is? Well that’s easy! It’s the stuff you can sing right now. I know some of you are saying to yourselves “but I can’t sing at all”. Trust me, you likely can, you’re just starting in the wrong place or possibly the wrong type of music.

This is an area where something like scale tapes come in handy. They have scales that are ascending and descending but have very specific exercises. Remember, you wont be able to hit everything they throw at you at first. Concentrate on the stuff you can do well (or the stuff you can do best for those who can’t do it well yet) and work your way up to trying higher register or lower register stuff. You will be able to do it eventually so don’t give up, but don’t beat a dead horse either, if you’re not getting the results you want, move on and come back to it. It is very possible to fatigue your voice to a point where your abilities will decrease.

I’ve seen this happen to people from time to time. They come to rehearsal and sound great at the beginning, but by the end they’re making excuses as to why they’re not hitting the notes. They’re tired. They’ve been trying to sing too high for too long or not breathing properly. Improper breathing, the ability to acquire the required amount of air to finish a phrase comes from being at your limit as well. Concentrate on the stuff you can do and make it stronger. Remember pain is not gain when it comes to singing. If it hurts, stop! You’re doing something wrong (more on that later).
